“Law-abidance” is a central phenomenon in the sociology of law; however, prevailing theoretical perspectives often remain limited to linear, instrumental, or adaptive interpretations. This study argues that law-abidance is a significantly more complex and multifaceted construct. By employing an interdisciplinary approach, this article analyzes legalism through its interaction with Iranian culture, drawing upon historical lessons from the Constitutional Revolution. Given that the emergence and stabilization of law-abidance are contingent upon diverse epistemic systems, a comprehensive understanding particularly within the context of Iran’s transitioning society necessitates a systemic analysis that integrates theology, jurisprudence, history, law, sociology, and anthropology. Using a descriptive-analytical method supported by survey data, this research contributes to the field of the sociology of law by demonstrating that law-abidance is a complex, context-dependent social behavior. The findings suggest that law-abidance exists in a dialogical, bidirectional relationship with its most vital prerequisite: culture. Because law-abidance manifests as a form of social behavior, it is primarily shaped by dominant social norms. Current data indicate that conditions in Iran are not yet optimal for the consistent practice of law-abidance. The study identifies a “sectarian” characteristic inherent in Iranian culture as a primary factor in this inconsistency, as it often conflicts with the underlying spirit and objectives of the rule of law.However, this relationship is not static; the ongoing dialogical interaction between the formal legal system and the cultural sphere has facilitated shifts in compliance within certain social domains, signaling an evolving dynamic between Iranian cultural identity and the practice of law-abidance.
